Sewing Project Practice

For Christmas "Mr. Hockey Homemaker" (you should see this guy crochet!) bought me a sewing machine!  This beauty in fact -

This is my first sewing attempt - I don't really know how to sew other than the idea of "stick the fabric under the machine thingy and press the pedal."  So, join me in my discovery of the crazy world of sewing, fabrics and some general crafting.

To start practicing - I figured that I would try something:

1. Cheap
2. Small
and most importantly
3. Almost impossible to screw up.

I decided to make small tie-backs for my curtains in my office/crafting room.  My old solution was a piece of string with a paper clip on it to loop around the curtains to hold them open.  Over at Hobby Lobby they have these small stacks of fabric in fun patterns "Fat Eighths" that I used as my fabric.

I chose one color and cut it in half.

Then folded back and sewed back the hems.

Here is the first one.  After finishing this one, I read that you're supposed to "double back" to secure the start and end of the stitch.  Oops.

Here is my second one.  A little bit better - I secured my endings.  However, I sew like how I walk... crooked.
